IT / CS Program
UMBC's CS program is ABET-accredited and ranked #77 nationally — genuinely strong, not just "strong for a safety." The College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) offers tracks in cybersecurity, data science, and information systems. Research is abundant: AI, cybersecurity, HCI, and software engineering are all active areas with faculty who take undergrads into their labs.
Campus Life
Active campus with 200+ student organizations, Greek life, and a strong tech/gaming community. The social scene is more low-key than a flagship school — students build their social life through clubs and the CS department rather than a party scene. Baltimore (30 min) and DC (1 hr) are accessible for going off-campus. Retriever Activities Center has gym, pool, courts, and a running track.
Why it fits Tai
Your homelab background — Proxmox, Docker, Debian, self-hosted services — makes you stand out here. The cybersecurity and systems tracks align directly with what you already do. In-state tuition plus proximity to the DC/NoVA tech corridor means strong internship access from day one.
Strengths
  • Top-30 innovative school nationally
  • #77 CS program — real ranking
  • Strong cybersecurity reputation in DC/NoVA
  • In-state tuition saves $15–25k/yr vs OOS
  • Active research for undergrads
Considerations
  • Social scene is quieter than flagship schools
  • Suburban area — limited walkable options
  • Smaller campus than UMD or Penn State

IT / CS Program
Towson's Computer Science and Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs are ABET-accredited. CS tracks include Math, Security, Software Engineering, and Information Systems. The program is solid for regional employers and government contractors. It won't produce the same research opportunities as UMBC, but for getting a well-rounded IT/CS degree and entering the workforce, it delivers.
Campus Life
Towson has a notably more active social scene than UMBC — larger student body, more Greek life, more sports energy. The campus has a lively feel. Baltimore is 30 minutes away. Good mix of on-campus events, clubs, and organizations. Students consistently rate campus life positively.
Why it fits Tai
If campus energy and social environment matter alongside academics, Towson has the edge over UMBC in that department. CIS and CS tracks are practical and career-focused. In-state tuition keeps cost low. A solid guaranteed fallback.
Strengths
  • More active social/campus life than UMBC
  • Larger student body = more connections
  • In-state tuition, very affordable
  • ABET-accredited CS/CIS programs
  • Close to Baltimore job market
Considerations
  • Lower CS ranking than UMBC
  • Less research-oriented environment
  • Smaller tech/CS community on campus

IT / CS Program
Salisbury offers a BS in Computer Science and a BS in Information Systems. Smaller class sizes mean more direct faculty access. The program is practical and career-focused rather than research-heavy. Good for students who prefer a close-knit academic environment where you're not just a number.
Campus Life
Smaller, tight-knit campus with a strong sense of community. The Eastern Shore location is a change of scenery from the DC suburbs — quieter, more outdoorsy. Students describe it as a place where everyone knows each other. Good if you want a close community over a big-school experience.
Why it fits Tai
Best pick if you want a manageable environment with small classes and a genuine community feel. Less competitive and stressful than UMBC or Towson. The IT/CS programs are solid enough to launch a career, especially when combined with your certs.
Strengths
  • Small classes, tight-knit community
  • Most affordable Maryland in-state option
  • Low stress, personal environment
  • CS and Info Systems programs
Considerations
  • Far from DC/NoVA job market (2.5 hrs)
  • Smaller tech community on campus
  • Less research activity than UMBC
  • Rural-ish location may feel isolating

IT / CS Program
Radford has a dedicated IT program under the College of Engineering and Technology — one of the few schools at this tier with a standalone IT degree rather than just CS or CIS. Covers networking, cybersecurity, systems administration, and cloud. Directly aligned with your career goals.
Campus Life
Classic college-town feel in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The campus is tight-knit, the town of Radford wraps around it, and there's a strong sense of community. Active social scene relative to its size. Students describe it as a genuinely fun place to go to school with a beautiful natural setting.
Why it fits Tai
Your one out-of-state option. The standalone IT degree is a strong draw — it's rarer than CS or CIS and maps directly to cloud/sysadmin roles. The college-town atmosphere and Virginia location give you access to the Northern Virginia tech market for summer internships and post-grad jobs.
Strengths
  • Dedicated IT degree — rare at this tier
  • Great college-town atmosphere
  • Very high acceptance rate — true safety
  • Access to NoVA tech market
Considerations
  • OOS tuition ~$22k — more than MD in-state
  • 4 hours from Takoma Park
  • Less prestigious than UMBC regionally
